The Pokemon Sun and Moon anime's new direction may surprise many, but that's considering it feels more like a reboot than a continuation.

Information technology took me about four episodes to really get into the Alolan groove of the Pokemon Dominicus and Moon anime. Here's some background: I've non really seen all the anime upwardly to this point. I've watched the first three seasons in their entirety, some of Diamond and Pearl, and a handful of episodes of 10 and Y and XYZ. Only I found it tiresome in every season to continue considering of the way the serial continuously roughshod into the aforementioned old patterns–Squad Rocket after Pikachu, Ash battling his fashion out of his issues, once again and again and again.

Not anymore.

The Pokemon Sun and Moon anime begins so abruptly disjointed from the remainder of the serial that it immediately feels like a standalone piece. Rather than sentinel Ash journey to the Alola region with Pikachu to brainstorm some new grooming claiming, he'due south in that location on holiday, and how he got there in the commencement place information technology told through a quick (and humorous) series of flashbacks that involve merely a handful of other entities: his mom, Professor Oak, Pikachu, and Mr. Mime. In that location is no mention of Ash's old friends or adventures. Heck, after ten episodes, he'southward only casually mentioned them once, and that was as a joking reference to his very offset Pokemon capture.

But the starting time isn't all of it. I know the jokes about Ash's age are all the same standing 20 years later, but The Pokemon Company has taken pains to age Ash somewhat equally he traveled. Canonicity aside, I'd peg him at near 15, 16-ish only in terms of how he handles his relationships by the end of XYZ. The guy got a kiss from a girl he liked, for Arceus' sake. That's not virtually as interesting a moment for 2 ten-yr-olds.

Yet in Alola, Ash is inexplicably ten once again. Just lookout the first episode, with his childish excitement about everything he sees. Ash is facing the world with a new wonder that he hasn't had in some time. But it's not the obnoxious immaturity he started out with in flavor 1. Rather, this young Ash is open and innocent, happy as long as he is with his friends, well-fed, and enjoying Pokemon. He's as well an insanely supportive friend to those around him, especially Lillie. Yep, I know, by the end of XYZ Ash had learned to capeesh his traveling companions, but this level of support and encouragement just seems several steps higher up and beyond that.

At the aforementioned fourth dimension, though, Ash demonstrates a strange level of maturity that I oasis't seen from him earlier, either. Permit's confront it: Ash isn't super bright. A recurring trope in the serial (and i that'south played with in Alola, too!) is that Ash loves to battle his manner out of problems rather than think them through. In Alola, he repeatedly recognizes that he doesn't really understand the complex things people talk to him near. But he shows that he's willing to learn and effort anyhow, something he would never have washed back when he was mocking Misty for being interested in manner.

Far abroad in Alola, at that place doesn't seem to be much risk of running into references from past series. We are not going to face downwards Ritchie again or have an awkward meet with Serena. Ash might drop a hint to his past hither and there, but aside from his occasional telephone calls to Mom, this hazard will remain solidly dissever from everything Ash has ever done. The Pokemon Sun and Moon anime could very easily be a standalone adventure, or a series reboot. If they never mention Ash's other adventures at all for the unabridged run of the flavor, that'd be just fine with me. But what I'grand agape of is what happens later on he leaves Alola. Do we keep the amazingly goofy animation style? Does he grow and acquire from his experience, or dump it all past the wayside when he travels to the next region? While that was a skillful thing in coming to Alola, the corporeality of growth Ash has already shown in simply x episodes isn't something I want to lose like it'south nil.

If yous haven't been watching the Pokemon anime for whatever reason, start with Sun and Moon. Seriously. Yous don't need to know anything else about the series, and for peradventure the first time ever, the Pokemon anime is an enjoyable, funny, heartfelt gamble. It'sentertaining.
